As guests of war from England arrive at Pier 21 in Halifax Emily and Matt must help a new friend search the ship for her lost brother.

ABOUT THE BOOK
In the beginning of World War II many young children, “guests of war,” were sent far from the dangers of the blitz bombings in England to the safety of Canada. Many generous families welcomed these children into their homes for the duration of the war. In this latest installment in the Canadian Flyer Adventures series, young readers follow Emily and Matt as their magic sled takes them back in time to take part in this very important period in Canadian history.

After finding a letter from a young girl addressed to her mother in England in the old dresser in the attic, Matt and Emily climb on the Canadian Flyer for their next adventure. Emily and Matt land on a ship on its way from London to Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They meet Kate and her younger brother John, who are very sad about being separated from their parents. As they are about to dock, Kate can’t find John anywhere. She is desperate. Kate promised her parents that she would take care of her little brother. Emily and Matt help Kate search the ship for John, but will they find him before the ship heads back to England?

Author Frieda Wishinsky weaves well-researched and accurate historical facts into her compelling, kid-friendly storytelling, while Leanne Franson’s evocative illustrations situate readers perfectly in the place, time, and action. At the end of their adventure, Emily and Matt share additional facts about World War II, the blitz bombings, and the guest children. Author Frieda Wishinsky gives additional facts here too, in an informative Q&A format.

REVIEWS:

The Chronicle Herald
"Far from Home will give young readers insights into facets of the war years beyond the stories from the battle lines in what was an important and proud part of Canada's history."

CM: Canadian Review of Materials
"History is not boring when Frieda Wishinsky retells it. Her writing allows children to take a quick trip into Canada's past and, while there, step into history as it's happening. Their travels allow them to meet people who are nice to know -- or hard to forget."

Montreal Review of Books
"Franson's animated sketches are a good match for Wishinsky's text, which humanizes history for early readers by relaying one family's struggle to stay united amidst the chaos of war."
