COMING NOVEMBER 2010:
Can Emily and Matt help the fight for women's rights?

ABOUT THE BOOK
It might seem hard to imagine now, but 100 years ago women were not considered “persons” by the Canadian government and, as such, women were not entitled to the same rights as men ⎯ including the right to vote. In the early 1900s, motivated groups of women, known as suffragettes, set out to change all of that. In Make It Fair! Emily and Matt travel to Winnipeg in 1914 and meet Nellie McClung, a woman who was most instrumental in this battle for political change.

The magic sled lands just outside the door of Premier Rodmond Roblin’s office; inside Emily and Matt can hear Nellie McClung confronting the Manitoban politician on the issue of women’s rights. Waiting in the hallway is Nellie’s daughter, Florence, who quickly makes friends with Matt and Emily. They then get invited to a play that is being performed a few days from then, a play which Nellie hopes will change everything for women in Manitoba. Women want the right to vote, Nellie tells them, and she’s determined that stuffy politicians like Premier Roblin will not stand in their way any longer. Can Emily and Matt help Nellie stand up to all the people who want to stop her fight for fairness and equal rights?

In this, the fifteenth book in the popular Canadian Flyer Adventures series, author Frieda Wishinsky weaves well-researched and accurate historical facts into her compelling, kid-friendly storytelling, while Patricia Ann Lewis-MacDougall’s action-packed illustrations situate readers in place and time perfectly. At the end of their adventure Emily and Matt list additional facts about the suffragette movement and Wishinsky shares more information here too, in a Q&A format.
