COMING OCTOBER 2010:
Short stories imagine what it was like to live in the Middle Ages -- all over the world.
ABOUT THE BOOK
What if a contemporary middle-grade student could spend a day in the shoes of a child in the Middle Ages? How would seeing these times through the eyes of another child create a deeper understanding? On a Medieval Day uses nine exceptional pieces of historical fiction to give kids just that opportunity.
The stories, all of which hinge on the universal trials of adolescence, are told through the eyes of boys and girls ages 12 to 14. Each character is introduced at the beginning of their tale through a commanding portrait painted by Peter Ferguson. Readers then follow each character through a single day, as author Rona Arato weaves rich details about food, transportation, entertainment, family relationships, clothing, and shelter throughout each story. In this way, readers uncover both the striking similarities and marked differences between the characters’ and their own lives.
And, contrary to the common Euro-centric associations of the word “medieval,” On a Medieval Day is about so much more than what it was like to be an English knight. The stories span across continents and nearly 700 years of world history, so whether examining an arranged marriage in China, life under the threat of disease in Baghdad, or the luxury good trade in Timbuktu, each story enlightens readers to a different complex and fascinating society that has shaped our world. Detailed backgrounder pages follow each story, setting the context using facts, maps, and illustrations and bringing readers further into history.
